Finally! There is a trend towards different and innovative design in the kitchen. The age-old “Work Triangle,” where the stove, refrigerator, and sink form the three points of a triangle or the primary work stations in the kitchen, is no longer the only accepted way to design a kitchen. The granite countertops, the standard box cabinets, the standard recessed can lights and under cabinet florescent lighting, and the stainless steel appliances are all making way for fresher, more fun and creative design. (Thank goodness; it was getting really boring.)
Restaurant inspired workstations with “prep” areas near a vegetable sink or the refrigerator, along with pull-outs for baking stations, under counter refrigerators for extra beverage storage, refrigerator pullout drawers, under counter dishwasher drawers and pullout microwaves are all adding to the ways in which you can personalize and organize the kitchen design to fit your lifestyle.
European style cabinets with sleek modern fronts are now seamlessly integrated with glass front or enameled appliances. The goal is to economize and eliminate unnecessary clutter and fussy details that equate to high maintenance and complicated living. Colors are added for some extra pop or to make a special appliance really stand out.
By highlighting this kitchen with energy efficient LED lighting and continuing it through to adjoining rooms, it allows the kitchen to meet the rest of the house without compromising on style. Add in some elegant yet water efficient one-touch or hands-free plumbing fixtures and the kitchen becomes more energy efficient with a cleaner look to it.
Last but definitely not least, countertops are another area where you can mix and match materials now to add depth and interest to the kitchen. Wood, concrete, cultured stone, and metals like copper, pewter, and zinc are all options to consider when designing your kitchen.
