It’s not like I’m bored; it’s not like I had time for an extracurricular project, a labor of love.
1 Room, 12 Looks, 24 Hours, you can’t do that. Maybe you should try for 8 or 10; be happy if you get one good look. No, I got this.
I wanted to create different rooms, Sitting Areas, Studies, Dining Rooms, Entries, Bedrooms, using different design styles and influences, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Hollywood Regency, Mid-Century, and Contemporary. And then I wanted to show that you CAN use art, any type of art: antiques and reproductions, sculptural pieces, prints, paintings, photography, ceramics and any style of art, Modernist, Abstract Expressionist, Surrealism, or Abstract in these different room settings. Art can influence the design of a room or the design of the room can dictate the art; it works both ways. But it always works.
I wanted to bridge the divides between the art, the end users, the artists, the designers, the admirers, the participators, the creators and the observers. I wanted to show that we can enjoy a Picasso and a Goldberg, or a Leger and a Luna, or a Hockney and a Smith, in settings that are comfortable, livable, and familiar to the people that live in them. Viewing art in a museum or a gallery in some ways separates us from the art and in many ways creates an artificial environment for the art. I believe that art is meant to be lived with, just as a room is meant to be lived in.
So over the next few months, we will share 12 Looks, shot in 24 Hours, using 1 Room. Everything you see in each room was generously lent to me by our vendor partners for the sole purpose of allowing me to create these rooms using this art. And everything, including the art, is something that you can have in your home too.
