Got Wood?

  • By Dorothy Willetts

“I think that I shall never see,

a poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed,

against Earth’s sweet flowing breast;

 tree that looks at God all day,

and lifts her leafy arms to pray,

a tree that may in summer wear,

a nest of robins in her hair;

upon whose bosom snow has lain,

who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

but only God can make a tree.”

-Joyce Kilmer

What is our attraction to trees?

I have always loved looking at them, standing under them, climbing in them, smelling the flowers of them and collecting the leaves from them.  They have provided us with wood for fires, acted as shelters from harm, and given us materials to design and build with.  Wood and its rich colors, textures and grain patterns give designers an infinite amount of options to create the goods we all use in everyday life.

The rings and sap of a tree show the growth life of this old beauty on its way to becoming a part of someone’s home as part of a living room floor.   Wood flooring, wood ceilings, wood countertops,  depending on how you have it cut, stained , and installed, wood offers a multitude of options to work with.

Maya Romanoff created this Ajiro Marquetry wood veneer wallcovering from a rapidly renewable material, the paulownia tree. The wood is die-cut and then hand-inlaid using traditional marquetry techniques. This is a great way to add depth and dimension to any room.

The wood table brings warmth and adds balance to a cool-toned living room.   We designed this table in a flat Walnut with a 100 level sheen and added a Brushed Brass edge detail around the top to both accent and protect the table top.

got-wood-2Terry Hunziker created this beautiful wood chair inspired by Japanese architectural elements and organic textures. It has a burled mahogany back and a solid mahogany seat.
